Into the Heart of Lesotho: A Journey Above the Clouds
Lesotho often called the "Kingdom in the Sky" is one of Africa’s best-kept secrets. Nestled entirely within South Africa, this high-altitude country offers rugged beauty, warm hospitality, and soul-stirring solitude for the adventurous traveler.
Day One: Arrival in Maseru
I touched down in Maseru, the capital city, and was instantly greeted by laid-back charm. Donkeys ambled down side roads, locals waved as I passed, and street vendors served up piping-hot fat cakes. It's a place where tradition is woven into every street corner.
Into the Mountains
No trip to Lesotho is complete without venturing into its vast mountain ranges. I joined a pony trek from Malealea a village known for its breathtaking views and Basotho hospitality. Riding through winding paths, past waterfalls and remote huts, felt like stepping into a different world.
A Night in a Rondavel
That night, I stayed in a traditional rondavel hut, bundled up against the chill of the highlands. With no cell service and nothing but the wind outside, I realized just how peaceful disconnecting can be.
Sani Pass Adventure
On my final day, I braved the Sani Pass a notoriously steep and rugged route linking Lesotho with South Africa. Our 4x4 hugged cliff edges as we ascended into swirling clouds. The reward? A cup of tea at Africa’s highest pub.
